Arta / Cala Ratjada / Colonia San Pedro

The municipalities and residential towns of Arta, Cala Ratjada and Colonia de San Pedro are situated in the northeast of Mallorca. Approximately 60 km from Palma, arisen on a mountain a long way off mass tourism there is the quite and beautiful village of Artá. The most prominent resident presumably is former tennis player Boris Becker. The town attracts visitors due to its mediaeval fortifications, distant views to the sea and its fascinating landscape, which is formed by a wide central valley surrounded by the mountains and a coastal area with a system of dunes and some rocky areas. Its cultural variety includes Talaiot de ses Paises, Monestir de Bellpuig, Església de Sant Salvador, Església parroquial, Ermita de Betlem as well as the Edificio señorial de na Batlessa with graphic works by the Spanish painter Miquel Barceló. In total there are 14 beaches in the municipality. The longest beach with a length of 1500 meters is the Arenal de sa Canova. It is situated at 13 kilometers from Can Picafort. The beautiful beach has fine-grained sand with shells and some rocks. Nearby there is the Teatre d´Artá with a capacity for 460 people. Colònia de Sant Pere is situated 10 kilometers from Artá. The beach Platja Colònia de Sant Pere belongs to the bay of Alcúdia. It is the only tourist area between Can Picafort and Capdevera although it is mainly a residential area, thus perfect for those looking for a break from the touristic areas. Colònia de Sant Pere is a typical Majorcan fisherman village including a lovely marina with restaurants, bars and cafés. The nearby Cala Ratjada is a well established resort with over 40 hotels and 12,000 beds. Furthermore it is one of Majorca´s most important fishing harbors. Two kilometers away there is Cap de Capdepera, with its Sa Torre Cega, where there is the Palau d´en March, which was built in 1911 and now is a museum-house of the wealthy March family. It has a large sculpture collection and fabulous 60,000 m² botanical garden. Further cultural attractions in this area include Coves de s'Ermità, the talaiotic village of es Claper des Gegants, Torre de Canyamel, Església de Sant Bartomeu as well as Castell and Far de Capdepera. The coastline of Capdepera has a length of more than 25 kilometers and is formed by a long rocky coast. In this area there are many marine and migratory birds, the Mediterranean land turtle as well as the urchin. The closest beach is the wide and sandy Son Moll, which is very popular by tourists. At about one hundred meters from the coast, there is the small island of Forana. The strait cannot be passed due to the lack of depth. The longest beach with a length of 520 meters is Cala Agulla, which is located at about 1.8 kilometers from Capdepera. This coastal area is well preserved by the government of the Balearic Islands and thus has not been developed. The area is very easily accessible by car, but it is recommended to use the public transport since there is a lack of parking spaces.
